“ The Story of Ireland series was a landmark for me as an artist. It involved creating one hundred engravings in three months for the five part series which explored Irish history from prehistoric times to the present day.

The famine period struck a chord, coming from the west I felt I knew these people and could almost summon them up and make them real. My great grand-parents emigrated to America in tough circumstances following the tragic path of the countless others that went before them, they were to die young in the promised land leaving two young buys behind them. The scars of those stories live on deep within us.

The ‘Famine Artworks’ found a permanent home in large print format at The Workhouse Centre in Portumna, Co. Galway, ten miles from where I spent my formative teenage years.”  D.R.
